Classical Flute song?
I just finished my third year on flute, and I’m going into 9th grade next year. I am auditioning for an opera — put on by students from another school — on flute, and I don’t know a piece I should audition with. I’m a bit more advanced than lots of the other flute people I know (like others from my school), so I would like a challenge. I have two weeks to prepare and if you could send me a link or give me a website that would be nice. It needs to be classical so no disney or anything like that. It has to be a solo because there’s no accompaniment.
First, I believe you asked this question before, but I thought that you were an advanced high school student or perhaps a high school graduate getting ready for college. At that time, I thought that you were auditioning for a summer repertoire opera orchestra that would be performing Carmen, Tosca, Marriage of Figaro, etc. So, I led you to collections of real Flute Solos taken from actual scores.
This time you clarified your question by stating that you are only in 9th grade. I still have no idea what opera you are accompanying and what its complexities are. On the other hand, you might be using the word ‘opera’ when the school is putting on a Broadway musical.
I went through several of the free download sites seeking high school level music that would be suitable for your audition. I settled on a Handel flute sonata that has several movements. I would suggest that you select two movements from the sonata to work on…one movement being slow and the other fast. The slow movement will allow the adjudicator a chance to hear the beauty of your tone and how lyrical you can play, while the fast movement will demonstrate your finger technique, tonguing and speed. You can select any of the three Handel sonatas at this link, but I would suggest the sonata in g minor. Good luck and enjoy!
