What is the probability of having more than one mouse in our home?
We recently saw a mouse hanging out in our bathroom. We caught it with a mouse trap. What is the probability of having more than one mouse in our home? Do they travel in groups? Should I set our more traps in case? I haven’t seen any more mice, just want to be sure!
While it’s not entirely uncommon for there to only be one mouse when one is sighted in a home, it is far more common that there will be more.
Mice are rapid breeders and females (at 3 months maturity) can have a litter of 6-10. If the mouse you caught was an adult, then it is possible that you caught one of the breeding parents. If you caught a juvenile, it is likely that the scent left behind by urine and fecal matter will attract more mice.
Here’s what you can do:
1. Inspect and disinfect areas where mice are active to remove urine and feces
2. Set a handful of traps baited with peanut butter, bacon or chocolate icing under the kitchen counter, beneath the stove, in the pantry and in the basement/attic if you have one.
3. Check traps every 24 hours to remove dead rodents
4. Inspect exterior to seal openings around cable wires, electrical wires, AC lines, and vents where mice can enter (preventing any new infestations)
5. Call your local Pest Control firm if problems persist – the trained eye of a professional can mean the world of difference when it comes to removing mice
